Solar-Powered Success: D A Cant Breaks Ground Ahead of Development Project

This case study explores the use of EcoLogic Solar welfare units during a roadworks project carried out by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. Hiring self-contained solar welfare units from Advanté proved to be a cost-effective and time-saving solution, providing a comfortable and efficient workspace for the project team.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure – Highways were contracted by National Highways (NH) through the Morgan Sindall Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) to complete a roadworks project aimed at enhancing safety and infrastructure.
The project required the construction of a new pre-cast concrete culvert head wall, installation of combined kerb drainage units, and improvement of the local drainage network. To minimise neighbourhood disruptions and logistical challenges, the works were scheduled during weekend and mid-weeknight road closures.
One of the challenges faced by the Highways team was the need for site welfare that could be set up quickly and provide all the necessary facilities, without connecting to external water sources, plumbing, and waste management. The team sought a solution that would save costs and time, but also have a positive local and environmental impact.

To meet the self-contained welfare needs of the project, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure – Highways chose to hire three sustainable Oasis EcoLogic Solar welfare units from Advanté. The EcoLogic Solar welfare units were carefully selected to include office/admin space and security cover.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure worked out of the following Oasis Welfare units:
80 | Day Hire Period |
99.96% | Silent Welfare |
0.04% | Generator Run-time |
£3,063 | Fuel Cost Saving* |
4.05 Tonne | Carbon Saving* |
78 | Day Hire Period |
99.99% | Silent Welfare |
0.01% | Generator Run-time |
£2,977 | Fuel Cost Saving* |
3.94 Tonne | Carbon Saving* |
78 | Day Hire Period |
99.82% | Silent Welfare |
0.18% | Generator Run-time |
£2,885 | Fuel Cost Saving* |
3.79 Tonne | Carbon Saving* |
*Savings over Diesel 11kVa Welfare Unit running 50 hours per week.
The average silent-running achieved across all three EcoLogic Solar welfare units was 99.92%, as the requirement for the generator to run is so minimal due to impressive solar gain and stored power.
Billy Horrocks, Works Manager for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, expressed his satisfaction with the solar Oasis units, stating:
“I was impressed with the cabins, especially with the amount of solar power produced. It was a joy not having to work in the cabins with the constant drone/vibration of a generator running in the background.”
The EcoLogic Solar hybrid technology provided a quieter working environment and minimised distractions, allowing for greater concentration.
The availability of self-contained solar welfare units from Advanté significantly reduced the installation and maintenance time compared to other site accommodation, as there was no need to connect to external services. Billy Horrocks further commended the Oasis units, by explaining:
“The Advanté cabins provided a comfortable and efficient workspace for our team. The self-contained feature saved us valuable time and costs associated with plumbing and waste management.”
